St Andrews University leads all other Scottish Universities, moving up 13 places to rank in the 'golden triangle of the top five of UK Universities. The gap between Oxford and Cambridge at the top of The Times Good University Guide is the narrowest since the league tables were first published 14 years ago. Oxford remains at the top of the table for the sixth consecutive year.
But the margin between the two academic powerhouses has closed to only five points out of a total possible score of 1,000, the closest it has been since 1993, when they tied.
Dundee scores half century
Scotland's other advanced education institutes find Edinburgh ranks second, weighed in at 13th overall placing, with Glasgow third, at UK 31, narrowly squeezing a lead on Aberdeen at 32.
Stirling is in 37th ranking followed by Strathclyde at 44, which leads Heriot-Watt at 45 and Dundee in 50th place trailed by Robert Gordon at 55; Queen Margaret, Edinburgh 58; Glasgow Caledonian at 62; Paisley at 94 and Abertay just making it in at 100 joint placing.
Universities are ranked on student satisfaction; research quality; student:staff ratio; completion, good honours, graduate prospects giving a total score of 1000. The TimeOnLine rankings allow two University comparisons, which can toss up some interesting anomolies .
A comparison say between Dundee and Robert Gordon shows that completion of courses is higher at Robert Gordon and graduate prospects are higher, although Dundee has higher student satisfaction and a higher 'good honours' ranking.
