Technology developed for use in multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (MUAVs), a sophisticated autonomous computer framework of control algorithms - the first of its kind - allows one operator to control a number of vehicles from a safe position on the ground making surveillance missions significantly cheaper. The technology also offers potential in search & rescue, environmental surveillance, mining, oil exploration, surveillance and reconnaissance for traffic control, fire extinction, oceanographic or geological surveys, and marine and border inspection.

CERN has been able to take the first measurements of collisions between particles with the highest energy ever generated and performed at the new Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator and recorded with the CMS Experiment, which involved a key component (the barrel pixel detector) contributed by the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI in collaboration with Swiss Universities.

A Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) workshop “New Languages & Future Technology Prototype” was held this week at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre in Garching, Munich, Germany for people actively involved in the assessment of prototypes, and programming languages and HPC research activities.

With a May deadline, the G8 Heads of Research Councils (G8 HORCs) have started the first multilateral call for proposals which addresses exascale computing, the fastest supercomputers of the next generation inviting researchers from the G8 nations can jointly initiate research projects and obtain the necessary funding within the scope of a new funding initiative. Researchers from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the USA are eligible to apply, under the leadership of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation)

Inspired by the fast processing of information in the human brain, a consortium of European research institutions is developing a novel kind of computing. The EU funded project “PHOCUS” started in January aims at designing photonic systems, communicating via light, to quickly perform complex computations including the rapid processing of large amounts of data, potentially consuming far less power than current supercomputers.

Opera Mini, the world’s most popular mobile browser, has crossed the 50m unique monthly users mark in January 2010, as users seek out the Opera Mini experience over other options by downloading it on their mobile devices. Equipment is the largest segment of the ALD market, with a value of $120.8m in 2009. That is expected to rise at a 5-year CAGR of 36.8% to reach nearly $579m in 2014. The other segment, materials, is projected to reach a value of nearly $400m in 2014, after rising at a CAGR of 38.5% from its 2009 estimated value of more than $78m.

Oracle is now nearly assured of its $7.4 bn acquisition of Sun Microsystems as the European Union's antitrust body formally signed off on the deal following a three-month investigation into its impact on competition in the IT sector. But while EU has granted antitrust clearance of Agilent's proposed acquisition of Varian, it set some conditions that involve the sale of certain product lines.

Scottish technology developer Artemis Intelligent Power, based in Edinburgh has developed Digital Displacement technology which replaces the port plates and swash plates in conventional hydraulic machines with computer controlled high speed solenoid valves and been named overall winner of this year's Carbon Trust Innovation Awards and won the 'Power' award category, as well as being shortlisted in the Transport category. Stirling-based Cascade Technologies also scored with its IR laser based gas monitoring technology.

Tayside Police has invested £300,000 in upgraded equipment, doubling the size of its Computer Examination Unit – after child concern reports almost doubled in the wake of the tragic killing of toddler Brandon Muir. Councillors heard this week that a serious backlog had developed in the unit and computers belonging to suspected paedophiles were left unexamined.
